Guinea Pig Bonding

Guinea pigs are very gregarious and enjoy living in groups; guinea pigs also live very happily in pairs.

They are unable to synthesize their own vitamin C which is why it is essential to provide this through vegetables and nuggets. Guinea pigs are susceptible to illnesses especially when they're young which often leads to ringworm, scurvy, respiratory issues and eye infections. Studies have shown lower cortisol levels when guinea pigs are in groups which indicates that they feel safer and less stressed; this is likely to decrease the risk of illness and disease.

  1. A case sheet is gathered by a downloadable document below which gives me more of an insight into the guinea pigs personalities and the problems had during previous bonding/ attempts.

  2. I then tailor a plan and the piggies come and stay with me for a 1 week vacation! Camera recording equipment may be used to assess behaviour when unsupervised.

  3. I will send regular updates and progress reports via email or phone which may include photos and videos.

  4. Once the week is up and if successful, the guinea pigs will return home for the post-bonding stage; you will receive post- bonding information care to follow. It is vital you follow the advice given to ensure the safety of the guinea pigs and to increase the chance of a successful bond.

  5. During the post-bonding stage, I will require regular updates and progress reports ideally including photos and videos which will allow me to offer assistance and advice where necessary.

  6. Hopefully after this time you should have two or more happily bonded guinea pigs!

It can take a few months for the guinea pigs to settle down and be fully bonded; during this time, they may display territorial behaviours such as rumble strutting and teeth chattering. These behaviours are perfectly normal and should settle down, however if problems still persist, please contact me for advice. Problems are more likely to occur with entire male guinea pigs, however I am still happy to attempt to bond; I am unable to offer 100% guarantee as many factors are involved.

If the bonding is unsuccessful, no refund will be given. The guinea pig's enclosure needs to be large enough to enable exercise and space away from the other guinea pig/pigs if needed. Bonding is only attempted with same sex guinea pigs or a neutered male and female over the age of 6 months. I am unable to attempt to bond any guinea pig that is undergoing treatment, is not eating properly or has any health issues that requires regular veterinary health checks. I am unable to bond a rabbit and a guinea pig and strongly advice against this due to dietary, health and welfare issues.

If you make a booking and cancel 1 month before the booking date, no refund will be given due to my busy schedule and limited availability. If you need to cancel due to circumstances beyond your control, a refund can be discussed.
